چکیده

Abstract. Understanding diagenetic reactions in accreted sediments is critical for establishing the balance of fluid sources and sinks accretionary prisms, which turn important assessing pressure field ability faults to host seismic slip. For this reason, we studied deformation bands (shear zones veins) within deep mud from Nankai prism (SW Japan) drilled at site C0001 during IODP Expedition 315, by means microscopic observation, X-ray diffraction, major- trace-element analyses. Deformation are not only more compacted than sediment but also enriched framboidal pyrite, as observed under microscopy confirmed chalcophile-element enrichments (Fe, S, Cu, As, Sb, Pb). In tandem, one shear zone sample displays a destabilization smectite or illite–smectite mixed layers slight crystallization illite relative its matrix, another shows correlated increases B Li veins compared sediment, both effects suggesting transformation into bands. The two sulfide precipitation smectite-to-illite explained combined action sulfate-reducing methanogen bacteria, strongly suggests an increased activity anaerobic microbial communities localized This local bacterial proliferation was possibly enhanced liberation hydrogen strained phyllosilicates. We suggest that anoxic boosted deformation, may contribute pore water freshening depth prisms. Deformation-enhanced metabolic explain illitization major Care therefore needed before interpreting illitization, other well, evidence heating, these might be biogenic instead thermogenic.

Heat flow and fluid flow regime in the western Nankai accretionary prism

The thermal structure of the western Nankai subduction zone has been studied through surface heat flow measurements with conventional geothermal probes and estimation of heat flow from depths of gas hydrate bottom simulating reflectors. Temperature and thermal conductivity measurements at ODP Site 808, located at the toe of the Nankai accretionary prism, added important information on any varia...

Scale dependence of in-situ permeability measurements in the Nankai accretionary prism: The role of fractures

[1] Modeling studies suggest that fluid permeability is an important control on the maintenance and distribution of pore fluid pressures at subduction zones generated through tectonic loading. Yet, to date, few data are available to constrain permeability of these materials, at appropriate scales. During IODP Expedition 319, downhole measurements of permeability within the uppermost accretionar...

ODP Leg 196: Logging-While-Drilling and Advanced CORKs at the Nankai Trough Accretionary Prism

The Nankai Trough marks the location where the Philippine Sea Plate begins subducting beneath the Eurasian Plate. The Nankai Trough subduction system has played an important role in causing many catastrophic earthquakes, a phenomenon observed at many other subduction zones (Ando, 1975). Recent studies have established that fluids play a major role in the physical and chemical evolution of subdu...

Heat flow survey in the vicinity of the branches of the megasplay fault in the Nankai accretionary prism

Heat flow measurements were conducted at four sites in the Nankai accretionary prism southeast of the Kii Peninsula, around the area where the megasplay fault reaches the surface, in conjunction with long-term monitoring of bottom water temperature at nearby stations. Analysis of the obtained data showed that variations in bottom water temperature seriously affect surface heat flow measurements...

13. Iodide, Bromide, Manganese, Boron, and Dissolved Organic Carbon in Interstitial Waters of Organic Carbon-rich Marine Sediments: Observations in the Nankai Accretionary Prism

This study of the interstitial water concentration-depth distributions of iodide, bromide, boron, δ u B , and dissolved organic carbon, as represented by absorbance at 325 nm (yellow substance: YS) and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), is a follow-up of the extensive shipboard program of interstitial water analysis during ODP Leg 131. Most of the components studied are associated with processes...
